If you have a dog that has a seizure condition, then you want to do what you can to decrease their chances of having seizures in the first place and to make sure that their chances of getting really hurt are minimized. The information you can review below will help you to learn more about living with a dog that has seizures.
You want to make sure your house is a safe space for your dog
If you have a dog that has seizures then there is always the chance that they will have some when you are not right there next to them. Therefore, you are going to want to do everything in your power to transform your entire house into a safe place for them--or, at least all of the areas of your house that they have access to.
One of the easiest ways for you to spot troublesome areas is to get down on your hands and knees so you are seeing the house from your dog's point of view. Now, imagine what would happen if they were to fall over and start seizing in the different areas. Correct anywhere where they could fall a distance, bump their head on sharp corners of furniture or hurt themselves on other objects. You can gate high areas off, use soft materials and tape to cover sharp corners or use other creative methods to turn hazards into safer spots. You should also make sure you put away glass statues and other fragile items that can be knocked over and possibly cut your dog while they are having a seizure.
Work closely with your vet
You want to make sure your dog goes in for all of their exams. If you take your dog to an animal hospital, such as Coastal Carolina Animal Hospital, the vets may try them on medicine to see if it will help to cut down on the number of seizures the dog experiences. However you also want to keep in mind that there are also other things that can be tried in order to give your dog relief from having so many seizures. Some people choose to use CBD oil either on its own or with the medication the vet put the dog on. Other people may try to take their dog to a pet acupuncturist, and they can often see fantastic results. If the condition is bad enough, then you should consider giving everything a try until you are able to find what worked best, it may even end up being a mixture of the different treatments.
