If you've got a cat, you'll need to take extra precautions once the summer temperatures start to soar. Unlike dogs, you can give them a dip in the tub to cool them down. Cats don't appreciate the water all that much. That's where a bit of creativity comes in handy. Here are four methods you can use to keep your cat cool this summer.
Make it Icy
Once the summer heat arrives, you'll need to increase your cats access to fresh water. You can do that by placing extra bowls of water out for it. This is particularly important if your cat divides its time between the outdoors and the indoors. You'll want to make sure that it has plenty of water wherever it roams. If you're going to be gone, and you're worried that the water is going to get too warm for your cat to enjoy, fill the bowl with ice and then add the water. As the ice melts, it will cool down the water for your cat.
Chill the Bed
If your cats bed holds in the warmth, it's not going to be comfortable during the summer. You can alleviate some of the heat, and give your cat a cool place to rest, by chilling the bed. Place a water bottle in the freezer, and leave it there overnight. In the morning, wrap the bottle in a towel and place it in your cats bed. The frozen bottle of water will chill the bed, and give your cat a safe haven from the heat.
Bring on the Damp Cloth
Your cat might not like a dip in the tub, but it's not going to mind being cooled down with a damp cloth. If your cat has been outside, and is feeling the effects of the heat, soak a cloth in cold water, and wring it out well. Have your cat lounge on the couch while you wipe it down with the cool cloth.
Cool the Room
If your cat enjoys spending time outside during the day, make sure you have a cool space ready when it comes back inside. Choose a corner, or a small closet, to create a cooling-off space for your cat. Set its bed up in one section, and then bring in a portable fan. Leave the fan on low so that your cat always has its own space to relax and cool down during the day.
